Between the spring of 2005 and the spring of 2007 we held workshops with nearly 500 women from across Manitoba representing diverse backgrounds of age, ethnicity, class, geography, lifestyle and ability. Our workshops educate women on the budget process through popular education, and they offer an opportunity for women to have their say.

Summary of what we’re hearing
Themes are reiterated in every group which speaks to the common concerns of diverse groups of women. In particular, the lack of affordable, quality, safe rental housing is raised repeatedly as a number one issue in each of our workshops.
For a summary of what we've been hearing in our workshops read our Summary. We also have a Compilation of all workshops held in the first year of the project.

What we do with what we’re learning
Suggestions for both government spending and revenue generated through our workshops go a number of places:
- Women share what they’ve learned with friends,
family, and colleagues. We mail a summary of the workshop to each woman
who participated.
- We invite local media to attend our workshop and write an article or conduct interviews for the local paper or radio station. This allows women and men throughout the region to become more aware of the issues. If media don't attend we write an article and submit it to the local paper.
- We post workshop proceedings and photos on our website.
- At the close of each workshop women have the opportunity to write a letter to their MLA asking that gender analysis be made a part of the budget process and naming their specific budget priorities. Letters are copied to the Minister of Finance and the Minister responsible for the Status of Women.
- We share our findings with the Province of Manitoba through regular meetings with Treasury Board staff, the Minister of Finance, and other key Ministers such as the Minister responsible for the Status of Women and the Minister of Family Services and Housing.
- Ideas generated during the first year of the project were used in the creation of Manitoba’s 2006 Alternative Provincial Budget which used gender analysis as a lens and was co-chaired by UNPAC and the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives Manitoba.
